franchhoek
completed 2016

Located on the Southern agricultural edge of Franchhoek, with the Hottentots Holland Mountains looming. The house is carefully set around several magnificent mature Stinkwood Trees with a vineyard rolling down the slope to the edge of the farm. The contemporary barn language is explored with a flush glazed floating roof, timber shutters recessed into the masonry wall plane and steel and timber pergolas provide passive cooling. The deep verandah is flanked by a 4 sided rim-flow pool which reflects the stinkwoods on the glass surface on still days. A zen courtyard provides light and privacy to the lounge. The interior detailing is minimal and crisp with a sculptural steel plate and timber staircase providing the focal drama.
