House Atkinson
Franchhoek
Located on the Southern agricultural edge of Franchhoek with the Hottentots Holland Mountains surrounding the site. The house is carefully set around several magnificent mature Stinkwood Trees with a vineyard rolling down the slope to the edge of the farm. The contemporary barn language is explored with a flush glazed floating roof, timber shutters recessed into the masonry wall plane, and steel and timber pergolas provide passive cooling. The deep verandah is flanked by a 4 sided rim-flow pool which reflects the stinkwoods on the glass surface on still days. A zen courtyard provides light and privacy to the lounge. The interior detailing is minimal and crisp with a sculptural steel plate and timber staircase providing the focal drama.
